The Trainer Development Course
Developing Facilitative skills to enhance Participation & Learning
Aim
This course is designed is to equip subject experts with the knowledge and skills to deliver effective learning, in a memorable and interesting way.
This course will be delivered using a blended approach – a mixture of face-to-face and online learning delivery methods combined with ‘on the job’ assessment and development over a 12 month period.
We will run modules as soon as we have 6 or more participants available and module will be repeated for those that missed them earlier. Face-to-Face sessions will normally be conducted at locations to minimise the participants’ travel.
Objectives
By the end of the course, successful participants will be able to:-
· state some of the qualities that make an effective trainer
· identify personal strengths
· explain the effect of individual learning styles on personal development
· explain the experiential learning cycle and its importance in effective learning
· demonstrate ability to deliver effective presentations
· demonstrate an ability to use reflective practice to develop self and others
· describe what is meant by student-centred learning
· describe what is meant by trainer-centred learning
· summarise the principles of adult learning
· explain the causes and effects of stress on trainers and course participants
· demonstrate effective time management
· produce effective lesson plans
· recognise the need for a flexible approach in selecting training methods
· describe various methods of delivering
· describe the responsibilities of a trainer for health and safety
· explain why the ability to handle a diverse group of people is important in training
· demonstrate an awareness of cultural differences and the importance of this in learning
· explain the negative effects of sexism and racism on learning
· demonstrate the ability to assess students’ learning
· demonstrate an ability to deliver learning online.
· describe some of the barriers to learning
Pre-course knowledge requirement
The course is designed for people who are required to help learners develop skills and expertise.
It emphasises the need to use facilitative methods and explains why ‘lecturing’ techniques alone are insufficient, in delivering effective training
The course will add to existing lecturing skills, but such skills are not a requirement, as some presentational enhanced skills will also be covered.
Equipment required
Each student must have a computer operating Windows 95/98/2000/NT/XP or an Apple Mac PPC with access to the Internet.
Sound cards will be (highly recommended, and having a CD-Rom drive will be required
Access to a printer will also be essential.
Duration
A 30 weeks course will be made up of a number of stand alone modules and can be completed over an 18moth period, or during a short period if desired.
This will facilitate people who need to take breaks because of work or family reason, from the course. The same modules will we run over a number of times to permit people to have flexible access.
At all stages they will work with other Course participants. There will be 5/6 face- to- face workshops. Tutors will assess actual participants’ classroom delivery sessions during the course
For those who have not previously studied in the Abacus Virtual College an additional introductory week will be available prior to the start of the course. The cost of this week will be included as part of the course fee.
Tutored Content
The programme contains 12 elements, 8 of which will be conducted using Computer supported Collaborative Learning techniques, linking participants via the Internet.
Modules
Getting Started
This two week module will start with a face-to-face workshop. This will permit participants to get to know their tutor and to demonstrate their level of presentational skills. The rest of the module will be taken up with course registration, software user tutorial, developing a personal resume, looking at what makes Good/Bad trainers and considering some learner needs.
Self Development
This is a 3 week module that will develop the ideas of self assessment against a set of trainer competencies. It will also introduce the concept of the SMART Action plan. These techniques will be used during the rest of the course to identify and develop areas of Individual strengths and weaknesses
Adult Learning (the Learner)
This 3 week module will look at the psychology of learning and how and why Learners learn. Having an understanding of theses processes should help participants design and/or deliver more effective training.
Adult Learning (The Trainer) This 4 week module will concentrate on the role of the Trainer in the learning process.
Getting Involvement
This 4 week module develops the facilitative skills needed to run group work, Course project introduction and various participant centred approaches.
Class Management
This 4 week session looks at the requirements of classroom management before, during and after a course.
Feedback
This 3 week module will look at giving and receiving positive and corrective feedback and how to help participants develop meaningful action plans.
Course Design
This 6 week Module will look at how to design a course and will result in participants designing a module for actual face-to-face delivery, using some facilitative techniques.
Face-to-Face element
This will cover Non- Verbal Communication, Presentations
Dealing with difficult participants, and
Actual course tutor assessment of participants delivery.
