Overview
Today’s fast changing working environment means that managers need to develop their skills to cope with constant change.  It requires managers to become both multi-skilled and flexible so they can operate effectively in many different situations.
It has been developed by Abacus, the Virtual College to provide flexible, accredited management development while ensuring the minimum of down time away from the workplace.
It also provide managers with high quality training across a range of management disciplines, encouraging them to focus on real life issues and  challenges relating to their workplace.

Aims
The course aims to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of both operational and newly appointed managers to maximise their full potential.
We will gain accreditation by an QCA (The British Qualifications & Curriculum Authority) approved insttitution, if required.
Objectives
By the end of the course participants will be able to:

* explain the principles and  practices of management in relation to
    their own operating environment

* effectively manage both the  people and resources they are
    responsible for utilise a range of communication techniques and deal
     with information effectively

* effectively manage change relevant to their working environment

* identify development needs and agree development plans in relation to
     staff concerned
 
*   list their legal responsibilities in relation to health and safety
     and industrial Relations

* monitor and maintain the  efficient use of resources within designated
    budgets

* identify the importance of self development and continuing
     professional development

Content

Introductory Residential Workshop – Week 1
This workshop aims to introduce participants to:

* the online programme content and  fellow participants

* practice some key team working, communication and management
  exercises.

* the content and delivery of the  programme.

Module 1 – Managing Self – Weeks (2- 6) This module provides the necessary skills for managers to manage themselves, take responsibility for their own development and practise the skills of problem solving, influencing, negotiating and understanding objectives.


Module 2 – Understanding Organisations – Weeks (7-11) This module covers the context and background in which organisations operate.  It provides an insight into the areas managers need to appreciate (although not directly involved in).  This in turn helps for a greater understanding for the need for change and the manager’s role with in it.


Module 3 – - Managing Activities - Weeks ((12-16) Dealing with the customer as the staring point for quality and output, this module explores ways in which resources can be used efficiently and effectively to optimise performance. It also covers the important issues of health, safety, legislation and the environment.

Module 4 – Developing People – Weeks (17-21) This module is about the vital role a manger can play in developing people they have responsibility for. This covers team building, individual and group development, coaching training and assessment.  It also provides an understanding of motivation and leadership together with ways to maintain discipline and minimise stress in others.

Module 5 – Managing Communications & Information Weeks (21-25) Effective communication is essential in all its forms to the manager.  This module covers non-verbal communication, feedback skills, written and face to face to communication.  It also deals with efficient and effective handling of information from source to collection, decision making and presentation.

Final Residential Workshop - Week 26
The final workshop requires course participants to prepare a short presentation linked to their project plus a programme review.

Total Course Duration = 26 weeks – (2x2day Residential Workshop) the remainder delivered online.
